THE DEAN MARTIN COMEDY ROAST OF CLAUDE TAYLOR

“The Employees’ CEO” – A Hangar Full of Laughs at the Hotel Bonaventure Ballroom, Montreal, circa 1983 – Brought to you by…
AIR CANUCK
“We’re Not Late, You’re Early.”
[DEAN MARTIN strolls onstage, drink in hand, with a wink to the crowd.]
DEAN MARTIN:
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the roast of Claude Taylor—the man who turned Air Canuck into the national bird of Canada. Under Claude’s leadership, Air Canuck took off… and sometimes even landed on time!
[Laughter]
Claude was the kind of CEO who shook your hand, remembered your name, and still made you pay $25 for a second bag.
[More laughter]
He was the heart of the airline… which explains why the airline kept skipping a beat. But we loved him. And tonight, we light our no-smoking signs, fasten our seatbelts, and prepare for a nosedive of insults so sharp, it’ll feel like a landing in Sudbury.
Let’s get this roast off the tarmac!
FOSTER BROOKS
[Staggers to the mic, glassy-eyed, with impeccable comic timing.]
FOSTER BROOKS:
Cl-Cl-Clauuude Tay…Tayyyylor. What a guy. He ran Air Canuck so well… [hiccup] even the geese were jealous.
He told me once, he said, “Foster, I want every flight to feel like home.” So I brought my recliner, my dog, and forgot my pants.
[Crowd howls]
DON RICKLES
[Arms crossed, eyeing Claude like a lion stalking a sheep.]
DON RICKLES:
Claude, you lovable civil service leftover. You ran Air Canuck with grace. That’s French for “we’re outta coffee.”
I flew Air Canuck once. The flight attendant handed me a sandwich so old, I needed a tetanus shot.
[Laughter]
You’re the only CEO whose office smelled like maple syrup and broken union promises. God bless ya!
RUTH BUZZI
[With her classic “old spinster” look and that swinging purse.]
RUTH BUZZI:
Claude, I flew Air Canuck in 1977 and I just landed five minutes ago.
[Roaring laughter]
I asked the gate agent if we’d arrive on time. She said, “Yes—just not today.” But you know what, Claude? You made employees feel like family. The kind of family that steals your remote and eats your leftovers.
RICH LITTLE (as Claude Taylor)
[Slips effortlessly into Claude’s calm tone and mannerisms.]
RICH LITTLE (as Claude):
“At Air Canuck, we believed in service, safety, and always circling Ottawa twice just for the scenery.”
RICH LITTLE (as Ronald Reagan):
“Well… Claude, I flew your airline once. You call it ‘Canuck Class’… I call it ‘Canoe with wings!’”
[Crowd laughter and clapping]
JAMES STEWART
[Hands gesturing, good-natured and homespun.]
JAMES STEWART:
Claude always said, “It’s not the planes—it’s the people.” And I believed him… until I sat next to a guy who thought deodorant was a government conspiracy.
[Laughter]
But Claude made Air Canuck feel like Canada in the sky. Kind, cold, and a little underfunded.
BOB HOPE
[Carrying a golf club, smiling wide.]
BOB HOPE:
Claude ran Air Canuck with charm, class, and just the right amount of tax credits.
The only airline where the pilots apologize before takeoff.
[Big laughs]
I asked for extra legroom—they gave me a seat in the cockpit! Thanks for the memories, Claude. And the delays.
NIPSEY RUSSELL
[Rhyming with precision.]
NIPSEY RUSSELL:
Claude flew the friendly skies with pride,
Even when the toilets froze mid-ride.
[Laughter]
He hired ramp rats, suits, and brains,
And somehow kept it all in lanes.
So here’s to Claude, our maple king—
The only CEO who made lost bags a thing.
BILLY CRYSTAL
[Slick, fast, sharp.]
BILLY CRYSTAL:
Claude, you’re Canada’s Frank Sinatra, baby—you did it your way.
Air Canuck was the only airline where the co-pilot also served the drinks.
[Laughter]
But seriously, you made the airline fly. And sometimes, that’s all we could ask for.
PIERRE ELLIOTT TRUDEAU
[Poised and suave, with that slight smirk.]
TRUDEAU:
Claude, my dear friend. You navigated politics, unions, and in-flight meals that could start wars.
You unified Canada—not with policy, but with seat sales.
[Laughter]
Let me say this in both official languages: You did good, mon ami. Even if you forgot to fly to Saskatchewan sometimes.
ORSEN WELLES
[Thundering voice, dramatic tone.]
ORSEN WELLES:
Claude was not a man. Claude was a monument.
A man who commanded fleets with the flick of a wrist and made Air Canuck more than an airline—it became an idea.
Also, I once flew it and they gave me peanuts so hard, I thought I’d chipped a molar. But what majesty!
JOE BLOW – Lead Ramp Station Attendant
[Ball cap on, vest still on, big attitude.]
JOE BLOW:
Claude, you were the only boss who ever came down to the ramp and didn’t ask, “Why are you guys just standing around?”
[Crowd erupts]
You knew the planes couldn’t leave without the grunts—us! And you remembered our names, even if you still called the tug a “little truck-thingy.”
From one blue-collar beast to the big cheese—you had our respect. Except for that time you tried to move a loader and hit the lunchroom.
[Laughter and cheers]
ROSE – Customer Service Agent
[Takes the mic with sass, clipboard in hand.]
ROSE:
Claude, you were a unicorn. A CEO who actually showed up in the terminal.
You smiled, you said hello—and you even stood in line once!
[Gasps and laughs]
You supported front-line workers before it was trendy. That’s why we never cursed you behind the desk.
Well… almost never.
[DEAN MARTIN returns for the final toast.]
DEAN MARTIN:
So here’s to Claude Taylor—Air Canuck’s fearless leader, flight path whisperer, and the last CEO who brought his lunch and shared it.
Claude, you made every flight an adventure, every employee feel seen, and every delay sound almost poetic.
You were the pilot of our skies… and tonight, you’re the butt of our jokes. But always with love.
Let’s raise our glasses—to the man who made Air Canuck more than a job… he made it a damn family.
[Band plays “Come Fly With Me” as laughter and applause fill the ballroom.]
