Standby Shenanigans: The High-Stakes Gamble of Flying for Free!

Andrew Dice Clay
“Let me tell you somethin’ about flyin’ standby as an airline employee… Ohhhh! You ever do that? You ever try to get on a plane when you’re technically not even supposed to be on it? It’s like tryin’ to sneak into a club when you’re 19. You ain’t sure if they’re gonna let you in or throw your ass out the door!”
“I’m standin’ there in my uniform, lookin’ like I own the place, but deep down, I’m sweatin’ bullets like a sinner in church, hopin’ and prayin’ for a damn seat. The gate agent calls your name, and it’s like you won the freakin’ lottery! But then you get up to the counter, and they hit you with that, ‘Sorry, pal, looks like we’re full. Try again on the next one.’ Ohhhh! Next one?! I don’t got time to be chasin’ flights like a dog chases cars!”
“And when you’re flyin’ standby, you get treated like you’re the bottom of the food chain. The scraps, baby! Everybody else got their first-class tickets, their priority boarding, and there you are, standin’ by the gate like some homeless person beggin’ for a seat. ‘Please, sir, may I have a seat?'”
“AND THEN… if you’re lucky enough to get on the plane, they throw you in the middle seat. The middle seat, people! You’re sittin’ between two people who act like they paid extra to crush your ribs for three hours! One guy’s hoggin’ the armrest like it’s his birthright, and the other guy smells like he’s been marinating in sweat since 1992!”
“I swear to God, I once sat next to a guy so big, I thought I was gonna be absorbed into his body like some kind of human sponge! I’m lookin’ around like, ‘Where’s the exit? I’m about to be suffocated by this dude’s love handles!'”
“And you know they always board the employees last. ‘We’ll call you if there’s room.’ Oh, if there’s room?! Listen, sweetheart, I’ve worked 10-hour shifts movin’ luggage heavier than a dead body, and you tellin’ me I gotta wait to see if there’s a seat open between someone’s suitcase and their emotional support peacock?”
“AND when they finally let you on, you gotta walk down the aisle like some kind of criminal, like you’re sneakin’ onto a bus without payin’. Every passenger’s eyeballin’ you like, ‘Oh, look at this loser. Couldn’t even buy a ticket!’ They don’t know you work there! They just think you’re some cheapskate tryna pull a fast one!”
“And let me tell ya, flying standby is like gambling in Vegas, but without the drinks! You’re hopin’ to hit the jackpot and get a seat, but more often than not, the house wins. And by ‘house,’ I mean those first-class schmucks up front, drinkin’ champagne and eatin’ warm nuts while I’m back here wonderin’ if I’m even gonna get a bag of pretzels!”
“And the worst part… oh, the WORST PART! When you finally do get on the plane, you gotta act like you’re grateful for whatever seat they give you. You gotta be like, ‘Oh, thank you, thank you so much for puttin’ me in 34B next to the bathroom! I love gettin’ hit by the drink cart every 5 minutes! It’s a freakin’ dream come true!’ Ohhhh!”
“And don’t even THINK about complainin’! You complain, they’ll throw you right back off that plane like, ‘You wanna try again tomorrow, tough guy?’ Ohhhh!”
“So, next time you see some airline employee sittin’ all sad and miserable in the corner of the gate, just remember, they might work there, but when it comes to flyin’ standby, they’re gettin’ treated like the rest of us bums—waitin’ to see if Lady Luck is on their side!”
“Y’all have been great! Fly safe—unless you’re on standby, then good fucking’ luck!”
