Lost in Translation: The Scottish Airport Experience

As told by Billy Connolly
Alright, let me tell ye about the Scottish station attendants at the airport, aye? Oh, ye haven’t lived until ye’ve tried tae understand a Glaswegian yelling at ye in a baggage claim area. It’s like getting slapped in the face wi’ a haggis!
Now, these boys, they’ve got the thickest accents you’ve ever heard. Ye go tae the counter to ask where yer bag is, and it’s like ye’ve wandered into a pub in the Highlands after midnight. Ye think yer speakin’ the same language, but, oh no—ye’re in the deep end now!
“Ah, yer bag’s aff tae Timbuktu, ye daft numpty! Whit are ye no listenin’ fer?”
I’m sorry, what? Did he say Timbuktu? I just asked if the flight was delayed, and now it sounds like I’m sending my suitcase on a gap year.
They’re shoutin’ at each other across the tarmac like it’s a bloody football match. “Oi, Jimmy! Git the flamin’ wee trolley roon here!” And Jimmy’s standing there, “Whit? Trolley? I cannae find me arse wi’ both hands an’ a map, let alone the trolley!” Meanwhile, yer bag’s been sent tae a different continent. Classic!
And the announcements? Oh, mate, the announcements are a work of art! You’re sitting there, waiting for some clear instructions, and what do ye hear?
“Ahhh, ‘ttention pleeeeease. Fligh’ 765 tae… ahhhh… wherever the hell it’s gaun… it’s noo delayed by ten hours because some eejit forgot tae refuel the plane. Sairry aboot that, folks.”
I swear, the people in the terminal just look at each other like, Did anybody understand a word o’ that? Was that even English or did we just get cursed in Gaelic?
And when ye try tae check in? Oh, it’s a disaster! Ye walk up tae the desk and say, “Hi, I’d like to check in for my flight,” and yer greeted with, “Och, aye! Whit dae ye mean ye want tae check in? Yer flight’s no’ fer three hours, ye impatient wee bugger!” They’re actin’ like ye’ve just insulted their gran for even showing up early.
But here’s the best part—when they start arguing wi’ each other! Two Scottish station attendants goin’ at it is like watchin’ two bagpipes havin’ a fistfight. Ye’ve got nae clue what they’re even mad about. One’s shoutin’, “Yer a muppet, Davie! Ye dinnae even ken how tae load a plane!” And Davie’s like, “Ach, shut yer face, Charlie! I’ve been loadin’ planes since ye were in nappies!”
And the passengers are just standin’ there like, Are we all gonna die? Meanwhile, yer bag’s probably takin’ a tour o’ the luggage belt, goin’ round and round like it’s on a wee holiday.
But ye’ve got tae love ‘em! They’re workin’ hard, but half the time ye’ve got nae idea what they’re sayin’. It’s like tryin’ tae get yer flight sorted in a foreign country when ye’re actually still in Scotland! But I’ll tell ye this much, I’d rather deal wi’ a thick Scottish accent than one more snooty manager in a suit who cannae tell me where ma bag is.
So next time ye’re in Glasgow airport, just brace yerself. Ye’re gonna get yelled at, yer bags might end up in Inverness, but at least ye’ll be entertained! Cheers, folks!
