Rob Penyk: SAFETY FIRST, COMMON SENSE OPTIONAL

Meet Rob Penyk, a retired Air Canada Lead Station Attendant, part-time cottage escape artist, and full-time human workplace violation checklist. Once dubbed the “Safety Nazi” (a term he somehow wore like a badge and a reflective vest), Rob took safety so seriously that employees weren’t allowed to sneeze unless they signed a hazard report and wore protective goggles.

But before his reign of rubber cones and laminated policy binders, Rob was just another confused graduate of Alderwood Collegiate Institute, a school so mediocre the yearbook subtitle read: “Well, it’s not jail.”

How did Rob get into Air Canada?
Nepotism, baby.
His dad worked there, and they needed someone who could tell the difference between a cargo door and a lunchbox. Barely.

 Career Highlights:
  • Lead Station Attendant: Known for yelling “STAND CLEAR!” louder than the tug engine.
  • Health & Safety Officer: Installed 14 “Watch Your Step” signs in the washroom alone.
  • Cabbage Roll Sub-Assembly Associate at the infamous Air Schmengy, a no-frills budget airline that never left the hangar, thanks to poor financing and worse catering.
(Their slogan? “You’ll fly someday. Maybe.”)
 Ethnic Origin: UNKNOWN

Some say Polish, others say Ukrainian, and one guy swore he was a lost Soviet cosmonaut. Rob has never confirmed his ancestry but proudly drinks like he’s from every Slavic nation at once.

 Life Outside the Ramp:

Rob spends his summers at the cottage, where the beer is cold, the air is fresh, and nobody complains about PPE compliance.
He’s also known to disappear into Amsterdam for mysterious “cultural” excursions. Authorities remain suspicious.
Customs agents know him by name and open his luggage like it’s Christmas.

 Usual Suspects:
  • Gerry “The Horsehead” Harvey – named for reasons we can’t legally print.
  • Jason Barlow – the only man who could out-lie a union bulletin board.
  • Chris Bewes – the quiet wildcard of the crew, known for his calm demeanor, strategic golf cart thefts, and disappearing acts whenever there was actual work to be done.

Together, they were the Four Horsemen of the Apron-pocalypse, known to cause more chaos than an unsupervised lav truck during a thunderstorm.

 Favourite Quote:

“If you can’t be a good example… then you’ll just have to be a horrible warning.”

(He embroidered it on his safety vest. With sequins.)

Now retired, Rob reflects on his career while grilling sausages in a flammable T-shirt and telling the dog, “Watch your paw placement, that’s a trip hazard!”

So here’s to Rob Penyk:
The man.
The myth.
The guy who once filled out a form to report a form.
